Mold Testing In Colorado
If you’re concerned there may be mold growing in your home, our staff at Rocky Mountain Biohazard are here with fast and reliable mold testing. Don’t let mold grow in the structure unchecked – find out where it’s growing and what kind of mold it is so you can make informed decisions on what step to take next.
The Danger Of Mold
Molds are various forms of fungi that can be found on any surface where moisture can accumulate, including within walls and underneath flooring. Not only can it be damaging to the surface of where the mold is located, but it can be dangerous for one’s health, especially if there are prior respiratory issues present. In many instances, the presence of mold cannot be determined without an IAQ sampling and a comprehensive report of the air quality from an accredited and certified laboratory.
When mold is present and unnoticed, it can cause respiratory issues, such as asthma, hypersensitive pneumonitis, and bronchitis. Symptoms will begin as headaches, coughing, watery eyes, etc., but can worsen over time, leading to critical illnesses.
The Mold Testing Process
Mold inspections, otherwise known as indoor air quality testing, is an in-depth process to determine if there are mold spores within a specific area. Mold spores are tiny, lightweight spores the living mold gives off in the air to spread. If the spore lands on a surface with moisture, it may grow into a new mold colony. The more spores present the air, the more mold there is in the environment. We can also identify different spores and which molds they come from.
We are able to conduct both residential and commercial mold testing. Our company uses a specialized pump and Air-O-Cell cassettes to trap possible mold spores floating in the air. The pump collects the air sample for around 10 minutes, though the time needed depends on the area. We like to collect air samples in as many areas as necessary to ensure we know the location of the mold. This usually takes one or two inside room samples and one outdoor sample to be able to identify the problem areas and to know how far the mold has progressed.
Typically, mold spore counts are found in higher concentrations outside than inside because that is typically the environment more conducive to mold growth. However, the mold spores can float through the air and find a new place to grow inside. For this reason, if a mold spore is found outside, it will most likely be found inside as well. A rule of thumb for spore counts is: the airborne spore count should be less than 1,500 counts per cubic meter of space (cts/m3), while Aspergillus/Penicillium and other hyaline spores are usually less than 700 cts/m3.
If a water loss took place behind a wall and possible mold is suspected, we can test inside walls using a wall adapter. We can also do surface testing by the use of a swab or BioTape if mold is seen. No matter where mold has gotten to in your home, we have the tools needed to test the area and identify a solution.
Creating Solutions Based on Your Results
Once completed, the Air-O-Cell cassettes are analyzed at an accredited laboratory. The scientist there analyze the air sample under a microscope and count how many spores are found on the sample. As the mold spore count increases, so does the health risk. They then send both Rocky Mountain Biohazard, Inc. and you, our client, a comprehensive report as to what spores were found in the air quality sample and at what concentrations. Some molds are deemed dangerous at lower concentrations than others so as a part of our testing process, we’ll help you understand the results and what steps need to be taken, if any, to remediate the situation.
Please see below for a list of different types of molds and where they are commonly found.

Types of Mold
- Anternaria Sp. Commonly found in outdoor air, on many kinds of plans and food products. It may be resistant to fungicides. Occasionally considered a contaminant of water damaged building materials which contain cellulose.
- Penicillium/Aspergillus One of the most common mold species to appear in indoor air samples. Majority of sub-species are allergenic; only a few are toxic. This group of species only grows with the humidity in the air as its water source.
- BasidiosporesOccasionally a non-wood rotting mushroom that will fruit inside a building if enough moisture is present.
- Cladosporium Another of the more common mole species that is also considered an allergenic. Certain housekeeping issues can be a contributing factor when elevated levels are noted, so room conditions are important to note when this is found.
- Curvularia A common allergenic mold
- Chaetomium A common water marker that usually indicates a wet paper and/or drywall that has occurred for an extended period of time
- Episoccum sp. Commonly known as a contaminant. No toxic or invasive disease documented to date.
- Memnoniella A sister mold to Stachybotrys, often found growing together. Grows on general fungal media, forming dark grey to black colonies. This mold is considered a toxic mold.
- Myxomycetes Not considered a true fungus. They move like amoebae when conditions are favorable, but when conditions are not favorable, they form a resting body with dry, airborne spores.
- Mycotoxin Any poisonous substance produced by a fungus.
- Pithomyces sp. Commonly considered a contaminant. Can cause facial eczema in ruminants.
- Rust Do not grow indoors unless their host plants are present. Need host for growth.
- Smuts Do not usually grow indoors. They are parasitic plant pathogens that require a living host for completion of their life cycle.
- Stachybotrys sp. The most common toxic mold species, but not all sub-species are toxic. This type of mold needs a direct water source to grow.
- Ulocladium sp. Widely distributed in nature, especially in soil and decaying plants.
** Finding Stachybotrys and other water markers (Chaetomium and Fusarium) or high levels of Penicillum/Aspergillus can red flag an area.
