The Risk of Cleaning Up After A Death

The risks of cleaning up after a death are coming in contact with biohazards and blood-borne pathogens pose a significant health and safety risk to anyone who may come in contact with them. Biohazards contain bacteria found in blood and other bodily fluids which can live outside the body for days and sometimes weeks. HIV and Hepatitis are the most commonly known risks that can be contracted from blood-borne pathogens. When a traumatic accident, suicide, crime, or death occurs it must be cleaned and disinfected properly.

Proper Death Scene Cleanup is Necessary

Because of the speed at which the body decomposes and the dangerous effects the decomposition can have on your home or place of business, it is important to implement a proper death scene cleanup by having the body removed and the area decontaminated immediately upon discovery. As the body decays, bodily fluids leave the human remains and seep into furniture, carpet, flooring, and even sub-flooring. According to OSHA standards, each of these affected items must be removed to prevent the spread of disease. Damage can be extensive from a body that is undiscovered for days, weeks or even months. Carpet, padding, subfloor, and even portions of walls must sometimes be removed to eradicate the health hazard and to control the overwhelming odor.

How Much Does It Cost?

Death cleanup is often covered by homeowners insurance. They will pay for our services, as well as the replacement of carpet and other items that were affected. We can file the claim on your behalf and submit an inventory of any items that have been disposed of or not able to recover due to biohazard contamination. In the event insurance is not an option we will work with you – our priority is to help you in your greatest time of need.

Do Not Allow Your Employee to Do the Death Cleanup

Companies must follow strict guidelines as determined by OSHA Regulation 29CFR1910.1030 which mandates that employees have proper and comprehensive training before they are placed in a position to clean up or handle any incident that could expose them to biohazards such as blood, bodily fluids, feces, vomit or chemicals. Call Rocky Mountain BioHazard and mitigate your liability.
